Activity Details

Example

  • Have the students find a partner (or a group of three if there is an odd number). Invite them to introduce themselves to one another.
  • Manipulatives can be math counters, colored chips, pom poms, buttons, cotton balls, beans, etc. Provide each pair with a die, ten manipulatives, and one bowl.
  • Direct each pair to put the manipulatives into the bowl and place the bowl and die in between them.
  • Review the number chart once more with the children, pointing to each number from one – six.
  • Select one child to help you model the game. Remind children of the importance of taking turns and using their manners.
  • Direct children to take turns rolling the die. Have them say the number out loud.
  • Partner A asks Partner B for that many items using polite words. For example, Partner A asks, “May I have three beans, please?” Partner B says, “Yes, you may have three beans.” Then, Partner B counts out that many items. Next, Partner A counts the beans to confirm the right number and says, “Thank you.” Last, Partner B says, “You’re welcome.”
  • Convene children as a whole group. Sing the Clean-Up Song together as children clean up the activity. If you want, you can bring caregivers back into the room early and have them assist.
